For blue ammonia, the hydrogen is produced from natural gas where CO2 is captured during the process. Current CO2 capturing technologies can cover up to 99% of the CO2 emitted during the reforming stage. To be considered sustainable, this CO2 will have to be stored underground.
To process hydrogen into ammonia, nitrogen is required, which is abundantly available in air and can be extracted with an Air Separation Unit.
The nitrogen and hydrogen are combined in the Haber Bosch Synthesis loop.
